Responsibilities

LOCATION: MARTINSVILLE, VA

 

The role of the Safety Specialist encompasses activities related to the wellbeing of employees including developing and implementing policies and practices to identify/mitigate hazardous conditions within the workplace and to assist the site’s goal in cultivating a zero-incident mindset. Individual selected will serve as the site resource for workplace safety while ensuring regulatory compliance and safety program obligations and initiatives are met.

 

 

Major Job Responsibilities:

  • Near-Miss / Incident Investigations: Lead/assist incident and near miss investigations by utilizing root cause analysis in addition to the Human Factor analysis in the incident investigation process. Investigating incidents and consulting with technical staff, leadership, and health and safety regulatory authorities to identify causes of incidents and prevent their recurrence.
  • Identify potential workplace hazards, unsafe equipment, work practices, and working conditions and determine suitable mitigation efforts to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Provide oversight and maintain compliance with corporate and applicable regulatory requirements, activities, and projects.
  • Maintain and manage site policies and procedures related to compliance with Health and Safety and analyzing records of workplace injuries, illness, and absences to identify areas of concern and provide information required by regulatory agencies.
  • Conduct Job Safety Analysis and PSSR for field activities
  • Daily floor presence to help coach and provide feedback (including positive reinforcements) regarding hazard identification and awareness.
  • Develop and conduct HSES training.
  • Manage and enhance the use of the incident management database.
  • Assist with ensuring HSE regulatory requirements and government reporting regulations such as Virginia OSHA Logs, etc.
  • Strong troubleshooting skillset.

  • MOC coordinator for Martinsville

 

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• Active participation in the site’s emergency response teams: medical response, etc.

Qualifications

• Requires a college or university degree. Preferred disciplines: occupational safety and health, environmental health and/or industrial hygiene or related 4-year technical degree.

• Prefer 3 or more years’ experience in industrial manufacturing safety, or related manufacturing plant environment

• Passionate and positive mindset in helping others work safely

• Ability to perform work indoors and outdoors. Work may involve climbing stairs, working in congested areas, and working around chemical process equipment.

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills

• Keen ability in building professional relationships with local and State Regulatory Authorities

• Proficient in basic computer software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Relational Databases).

• Candidate should be able to work independently with a moderate level of guidance and direction.
